Poletopra - Tote - 1 Jan 2011

(forwarded from Sean Baxter)
----------------------

Saturday, January 1st, 2011 (New Years Day) @ The Tote, Melbourne

Kicking off the new year in eclectic style at Melbourne's home of punk rock, with the visceral brutality of the amazing Pateras/Fusinato duo project, Poletopra; the sublimely, fractured beauty of Francis Plagne's band with strings; and a double floor tom, sub bass frequency beating solo from myself:

Hungover, brutalized by public stupidity? Can't remember what happened last night? That's OK! The Tote is open for business NEW YEAR'S DAY and POLETOPRA, FRANCIS PLAGNE and SEAN BAXTER will be sonically curing your injured synapses, with, well, possibly more injury!

POLETOPRA is the combination of visual art iconoclast MARCO FUSINATO (guitar/electronics) and all around composer/electronics whacko ANTHONY PATERAS (analogue synth) in searing duo format. Due to busy international schedules, local appearances are rare for this group, so what better way to continue the count down for the Mayans than with the sounds of apocalypse!

FRANCIS PLAGNE is the acclaimed pop introvert/ all around musical know-it-all who quietly entraps his audiences with delicate melodies and fragile arrangements. Joined with full band and strings, his live shows are a rare gem.

SEAN BAXTER is THE poet of Melbourne avant sound, and has been an on stage regular at the Tote since the early 90s in guises such as the Throwaways, Bucketrider, Embers, his duo Valerio Tricoli and SxSxSx. He even has a photo behind the bar. As head honcho of the Make It Up Club, his speeches are almost as famous as his internationally famous shitcore percussion stylez.

This is an all-star bill guaranteed to cleanse the mind and feed the ears on the day after humanity reaches its yearly low. What do you do on New Year's Day anyway?

Tuesday December 21st @ the Make It Up Club

In the final concert for MIUC's 2010 season we have a ripper of a show that encapsulates our philosophy of bringing together improvisers from across time and space, experience and idiom. A debut duo from two iconoclastic guitarists of Melbourne's avant scene: MIUC founder and free improv veteran Ren Walters joined by firebrand punk-jazz skronkmaster, Troy Naumoff. And a new trio comprising three rising stars of the avant classical scene with improv chops to burn. MIUC returns on January 18th, 2011.

Troy Naumoff (guitar) and Ren Walters (guitar)
Aviva Endean (reeds), Ryan Williams (recorders) and Matthew Horsely (percussion)

And KNOB, a post-psych, noise-prog improv project featuring some of the great experimental musicians associated with Bar Open.

This Wednesday the 1st of December @ Stutter...

  • UNDECISIVE GOD
Undecisive God is the solo experimental music project of Clinton Green. His current interest is in exploring the unnatural yet largely unprocessed sounds of broken or 'wrongly played' instruments and sound devices, specifically guitar and record players. Using multiple turntables and layers of shattered/melted vinyl, he attempts to build organic loops that chaotically sample slices of forgotten record collections and reveal unexpected sonic epiphanies. http://ShameFileMusic.com/ug/

  • MAKE UP SEX
Make Up Sex comprise of one Sophia Brous and one Tarquin Manek. Initially based upon improvising guttural vocalisations of feelings of sexual tension and release, in recent times their concepts have devoloped into those of wider human concerns and narratives whilst remaining undoubtly sexual. None of us would be here without sex of course, and to those perhaps from another planet where reproductive acts are redundant or for those born out of test tubes, Make Up Sex may appear to be a little obscure.

  • G.N. CARAZO and R.M. MARLOW
Prepared and extended turntable techniques utilising recycled/re-used surfaces and objects to explore the possibilities of curious noise.

Exile: The World’s First Opera for the iPad

EXILE. THE SCREEN BLEEDS

EXILE is the world’s first Opera for the iPad. An interactive music video, EXILE combines the exquisite drama of Helen Gifford’s chamber opera with the extraordinarily textured and layered generative visuals of cult digital artists Champagne Valentine (Amsterdam).

Aphids announces EXILE will go LIVE and will be made FREE for Download via the App Store 6pm on December 10th, with previews on Federation Square Screens. The Fed Square wireless network will provide easy links all summer to this pixelbending interactive EXILE iPad App.

The sophisticated technical and visionary expertise of Champagne Valentine enables a playful generative art experience, allowing the user to navigate the psychological state of high priestess Iphigenia, drawing voodoo motifs of blood and bones, serenaded by the haunting operatic reflections on Iphigenia’s gruesome history conducting human sacrifices.

EXILE is a major Victorian and international collaborative production for 2010, and is the ultimate and dramatic combination of advanced digital media, new mobile technologies and contemporary music.

EXILE for the iPad is a co-production of Aphids and Chamber Made Opera. It was recorded in co-production with Speak Percussion for a live studio audience at the Iwaki Auditorium with ABC Classic FM, with Iphigenia played by renowned soprano Deborah Kayser.

EXILE
AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD via the App Store:
6pm, Friday 10th December, 2010

Dolphins into the Future - Sunshine & Grease - 2 Dec 2010

DOLPHINS INTO THE FUTURE & MONOPOLY CHILD STAR SEARCHERS

HSP is pleased to present the Oceanic voyage and tour diary of US and Belgium travelers, and DOLPHINS INTO THE FUTURE & MONOPOLY CHILD STAR SEARCHERS.

at Sunshine & Grease, Thursday 2nd December, 8pm, $10

with support from: MOUVING, & TIM COSTER.

PLEASE NOTE: Melbourne show starts early (8pm), and capacity is limited to the first 50 people!

Dolphins into the Future is the Antwerp-based, Cetacean Nation Communications and Taped Sounds ambassador, Lieven Martens. Forming his music through a process of ‘automatic writing instigated by dialogues with the cetacean world’, Martens’ warbly and effervescent sonic ecosystems abound with the attuned aquatic energies and tranquility of liquindi percussion, echolocative synth gurgle, Polynesian cantata and tape-collage swirl.

Martens has released music on Kraak, Not Not Fun, Release the Bats, and his own evolving imprints, which have also played host to an array of artists such as, Oneohtrix Point Never, Orphan Fairytale, Kraus, J.D. Emmanuel, Emeralds’ Steve Hauschildt and James Ferraro. Dolphins’ radiant musical glare and calming ascension emerges from an innerspace of reflective elation and Higher Intelligence.

Monopoly Child is The Skaters’ and Pacific City Vision’s Spencer Clark. His ornate, hallucinatory environments are enacted through a Xerox mirage of celestial horse gallop, mizmar-like horn melisma and avian vocal Interpretation. His live performances have been likened to a mix of temple inauguration and 50's Ethnic Folkways bootleg, and his myriad of recorded artifacts surf from devotional pyramid drone and celestial bamboo ritual to the tropical romance audio novel of his most recent vision, ‘Make Mine, Macaw’.

Courtesy of the Ancient Skywatchers of California and Shamans for Levitated Coconuts, amongst other distant bureaus, Clark’s cosmic accretion of tapes, CDrs and LPs have appeared on labels like Old English Spelling Bee, Heavy Tapes, Eclipse and New Age, and he has collaborated and performed with artists such as Tomutonttu, Sonic Youth, Deerhoof, Nurse With Wound, Charalambides, Melvins and Wooden Wand.

Thanks to HSP, Kraak, High Reflections, Obedient Atom, Adam Art Gallery, Happy, Disembraining Machine and Altmusic NZ for their support.

The Australian Cassette Underground - a historical overview

Don Campau's excellent website The Living Archive of Underground Music recently published a historical overview of cassettes in Australian underground music, written by Artefacts compiler, Clinton Green. Amongst other things, the article discusses Ron Nagorcka's tape recorder opera "Atom Bomb" as a key event in the development of tape music (where tape recorders are the primary generators of aural and/or compositional materials) not only in Australia but internationally as well. "Atom Bomb" is essentially a dialogue between performers and several domestic tape recorders, where sonic materials (vocals and keyboards) are generated during the performance, sampled, played back and resampled by the tape recorders. In composing "Atom Bomb", Nagorcka recalled a statement from Jean Charles Francois earlier in the decade to the effect that ‘all electronic music is a distortion of music’s reality’; "Atom Bomb" is essentially an exploration of this concept with cassette tapes.

First performed at the Clifton Hill Community Music Centre in 1977 by Nagorcka and Warren Burt, "Atom Bomb" will be performed for the first time in thirty years by contemporary New Music trio, Golden Fur, at the launch for the Artefacts of Australian experimental music: volume II 1974-1983 double CD, on 27 November 2010 at the Iwaki Auditorium in Melbourne. Don't miss this one-off re-imagining of a key work from the Australian experimental music canon.

SeedPod #6 Nov 13th/14th

Immersion Studio:
by Jacques Soddell and Tessa Elieff
Saturday November 13th and Sunday November 14th
8pm
The Old Fire Station/Engine Room, Bendigo
Tix $10 @ the door

Sound does not know the rules that apply to us regarding walls, corners and closed doors. It travels through, beyond and around – being in numerous places at once yet existing as a single entity. It permeates our surroundings and impacts on our environment. Under the guise of being unseen it expands and contracts space, pulling and twisting the edges we construct around our perceived reality.

Tessa Elieff is currently completing her honours in Bachelor of Fine Arts (Sound) at RMIT. Her work centres on recordings of natural sonic phenomena. Spaces and places that create their own unique audible environment.

Jacques Soddell is a sound artist producing electroacoustic music, with an interest in deconstructing natural sounds (field recordings) to create new sounds & textures.

During their time in the Immersion Studio Tessa has collected surround and stereo recordings from Bendigo's Sacred Heart Cathedral and Jacques has delved further into methods of manipulation, destruction and cohesion regarding sound.  Their final presentation will showcase a work created from their skills combined - one that entwines both the untouched field recording and it's manipulated Other.  Listeners will experience a piece that aims to challenge our interpretation of reality, provoking us to question everyday perceptions we regard as being absolute.

TSS:
The Terminal Sound System is s.klein, half of cult doom-noise outfit HALO (Relapse Records), joined live by real human compatriots m.fogarty and g.haztigeorgiou, and a synced visualscape of reappropriated video.
Described by at least one inebriated listener as “Cinematic Doom”, the Terminal Sound System builds imaginary soundtracks out of crystalline eight-dimensional Meccano, layering doom riffs with malfunctioning breakbeats, apocalyptic postrock with sinister subbass worship and post-post Lynchian cocktail IDM.

The Veil:
The Veil are a Dark Atmospheric band currently based in Sydney. Founded in 2006 by Che deBoehmler, the band soon began demoing material and solidifying the lineup.
In early 2009 The Veil released the “Nightfall Watching” EP, displaying a broad mixture of influences and succesfully blending elements of Doom, Post-Punk/Early Goth, and touches of early 90s-esque Death/Black Metal. The Veil are currently in the final stages of recording their debut album.

Stellarvore:
STELLARVORE are an improvised, experimental, instrumental duo out of Melbourne consisting of D on Drums and C on Guitar/Bass and Synths.
Born as a side project of Blasting Death/Black outfit Severian, Stellarvore quickly took on a life of it’s own as the duo found themselves embracing the freedom a simpler formation brings. Mixing Doom, Black Metal, Shoegaze, Noise and Industrial STELLARVORE is an ever changing beast with eyes of fire and blood in its mouth.

Abre Ojos: is improvised sound and vision for dystopian meditation using modular synths http://abreojos.net

Transmissions From Pyongyang

Four bands have been brought together to release one sonic message bathed in the visual projections of Paul Rogers, one of Melbourne’s most original and pioneering VJs.

The show encompasses the seafaring auditory narratives of Cuba is Japan, with drummer Cameron Potts press-ganged back into service after a stint at sea with Bordoms. The intergalactic depravity of Slocombe’s Pussy with their full arsenal of psycho-delic phonic weaponry, warming up ready for the launch of their 53 minute DVD debut in early 2011.

Agonhymn and their own concoction of venomous black jazz, oozing like aluminum sludge flowing from a ruptured tailings dam in the picturesque countryside of Western Hungry. And Abre Ojos, the one-man modular synth pyromaniac pitting man against machine with scrambled electronics and projections provoking metacognitive reflection…

This is the first presentation under the auspices of Supercriticality Records.

New stuff on Shame File Music

Ernie Althoff "Colour Chart" CD - 18 recordings of Althoff's solo music machines that are intimate in the sonic detail and delicate percussiveness, as they gently beat away like they were right next to your ear. Limited edition of 100, with unique handmade covers by Althoff

Ernie Althoff "For Two on Blue/Saturday Stories" cassette - Side A is a duo with Warren Burt for environmental sound, found objects and Althoff's unique music machines. Side B was conceived as a radio piece in which Althoff takes us on a journey through Melbourne's Victoria Market and his thoughts about adapting some of the toys he sees there into instruments. Recorded in 1987, only a handful of this classic Althoff tape still remain.
Various Artists "Best Seats in the House! Melbourne Improvisors' Association at the Limerick Arms Hotel, 1991" cassette - This live document of the Melbourne experimental improv scene from the early 1990s includes Graeme Leak, Puppenspiel, Ernie Althoff, Warren Burt and many more. Only a couple of copies left.
Chris Mann "A Machine for Making Sense" cassette - Mann's extraordinary textual/speech performances are rarely available, and this recording from the late 1980s/early 1990s is a compelling example of his "compositional linguistics", where his rapid fire speech creates textures full of cadence and idea-upon-idea that is Joycean in scale. Only one copy left.
Various Artists "Artefacts of Australian experimental music" volume II 1974-1983" double CD - special pre-order deals available for a limited time - out in November.

The Australian free improvisation tradition would be a poorer place without David Tolley, one of the motivating forces behind the MIUC, and a mentor of great stature for so many radical musicians from the last century. This week, the MIUC is honoured to welcome him back to performance duties, and with a legendary group, no less. The ReMOVALISTS feature some of Melbourne's most dedicated exploratory improvisers who have been refining their craft and inspiring the rest of us for decades. Adam Simmons needs no introduction, as one of the many masters of woodwinds in all their complex variation. And further masters in Chris Young and Tom Fryer, in a very rare duo performance.

SABBATICAL PRESENTS 241010

Sunday 24 October, Melbourne based advocates of buried sound Sabbatical present a fascinating lineup of local explorers at The Workers Club (Cnr Brunswick and Gertrude Streets Fitzroy). Opening the evening is the duo of Mitchell Brennan and Fjorn Butler, pursued for a Melbourne outing after an excellent set centred on junk instrumentation and digital signal processing at Vox Cyclops in Newcastle over the TINA weekend recently. Judith Hamann follows with a solo cello performance, exploring the timbral and sonic possibilities of the instrument through preparations, alterations and alternative methods of physical engagement. The duo of James Rushford and Joe Talia then offer works that are part instrumental concréte, part ambient drone. This accomplished duo uses prepared viola and tabletop percussion to create sounds more akin to a modular synthesiser than acoustic instruments. Closing the evening is the Dead Boomers industrial harsh noise duo of Mark Groves and Leith Thomas, accompanied in this instance by Dan Crow of local grindcore unit Odiusembowel on drums. A virulent close to proceedings is assured, ideal when bracing for an impending Monday morning. 7pm / $6.50

undue noise bendigo october 16

Undue Noise
Sat 16th October 2010, 8pm $10

Old Fire Station, View St Bendigo

Enquiries: jacques@cajid.com; 0421786595

An exciting program this time, with films by Daylesford based Richard Touhy, who had a superb film shown at this year's Melbourne International Film Festival, the return of two Bendigo sound artists from the earlier days of undue noise, and a new local collaboration

The films of Richard Touhy

Situated in the materialist film tradition, Tuohy’s films exhibit a fascination with both the power of the mechanical cine camera, as well as the possibilities of experimental laboratory processes, frequently using natural environments and nature-scapes as the ‘gorund’ for his experimentation and abstraction. This selection includes two multi-projector expanded 16mm works.

Rotteur

Rotteur has been an ongoing project since first inception in 2000. Initially a studio-based melange of noise and industrial influences, it has developed to encompass live performance, focusing primarily on the domain of dark ambient. Sometimes abrasive, sometimes meditative, Rotteur makes cold, desolate soundscapes, haunted by droning machinery and sparse abstracted electronics. It’s intention is to explore the deepest abysses and undercurrents of the psyche; to dissolve all illusions. A hymn to the sub-terrain of emptiness, isolation and decay inherent in modern civilisation. (Darcy Long, using the names sig.int and rotteur was a regular in the early days of undue noise)

The Lonely Drone
The Lonely Drone is the alias of former Bendigo guitarist Jesse Lynch, from the band Pioneers Of Good Science. The Lonely Drone sound is a unique balance of lofi guitar drones & effect pedal manipulation cooked up into a dense fog of sound. Incorporating multiple layers of ambience, melody and texture.

Scott Sanders & Simon Howard

a new local collaboration - guitar, electronics, keyboard

  • MUD BRICK COUCH (Jarrod Zlatic solo)
  • SIMON TAYLOR
  • TIM COSTER

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • TOMUTONTTU
Tomutonttu is the solo project of Jan Anderzén, a visual artist and musician from Tampere, Finland, whose pivotal role in Kemialliset Ystävät and collaborative raids in Avarus and Anaksimandros has - alongside Fonal label colleagues, Es, Paavoharju, Kuupuu, Islaja, Fricara Pacchu, Lau Nau and Shogun Kunitoki - elevated the Finnish experimental underground into a Renaissance-like state, its cross-pollinating telepathy producing some of the most acclaimed records and performances since the mid 2000s, while setting a universal example for communal musical exploration.

The most prolific of the Fonal stable and its related tributaries, Anderzen’s music has also appeared on labels such as Ultra Eczema (Lucky Dragons & Yacht, Orphan Fairytale, Wolf Eyes), Fat Cat (Animal Collective, Black Dice, Múm), Dekorder (Richard Youngs, Xela) Lal Lal Lal (The Skaters, Javelin, Keijo), Jewelled Antler (Skygreen Leopards, Steven R. Smith) and Imvated/Taped Sounds (Christina Carter, The Futurians, Ignatz, Thurston Moore, Magik Markers). In 2008, Anderzén toured and recorded on the Approximately Infinite Universe Tour: A Caravan of Raw Sound Magic from Finland and the US, with Blevin Blectum, Axolotl, Sumara Lubelski, Fursaxa and members of The Skaters and No Neck Blues Band. He has also held workshops and played a series of concerts for school children at the planetarium of his hometown.

Anderzen’s wraithlike powwow, weirdo choral ascents, elated bleeps, bubbly glossolalia and poltergeist thumps coalesce in a captivating sylvan kaleidoscope of psych hyperbole in all his projects, but it is live, in his solo incarnation as Tomutonttu that these magnetic qualities are best articulated. As unassailable blog, Mutant Sounds has described, Tomutonttu is a 'delightful traipse through a verdant forest of ergot poisoned art brut psychedelic deconstructionism; all wobbly string fumble, lobotomized key wheeze and detuned flute toot that’s wonderfully right in it's ungainly ''wrongness'''.

  • MUD BRICK COUCH
Debut performance from Jarrod Zlatic's (Fabulous Diamonds, Free Choice) Mud Brick Couch. Expect slowed down inverted Womack & Womack vocal loops with radio static, FX/EQ processing etc.

As unassailable blog, Mutant Sounds has described, Tomutonttu is a 'delightful traipse through a verdant forest of ergot poisoned art brut psychedelic deconstructionism; all wobbly string fumble, lobotomized key wheeze and detuned flute toot that’s wonderfully right in it's ungainly "wrongness"'.
