Rosy Parlane (NZ) & ILIOS (Greece) play Maximum Arousal this Sunday Oct 4!

Sun Oct 4
The Toff 252 Swanston St Melbourne

Maximum Arousal presents:

ROSY PARLANE (New Zealand)
ILIOS (Greece)

Maximium Arousal is proud to present a unique evening of sound art!

He is mostly unsung and not overly prolific, but Rosy Parlane is one of the kingpins of slowly uncoiling, constantly changing drone music whose purposefulness is directly proportional to its smothering beauty.
Hailing from New Zealand, Parlane began playing music with the avant-garde rock trio Thela. Thela released two cds, Eponymous and Argentina on Thurston Moore's label Ecstatic Peace! He subsequently began working with abstract electronic based music, both as a solo artist and as Parmentier with fellow Thela collaborator, Dion Workman.
His full and intricate soundscapes are comprised of of sample-loops, pianos, guitars, and field recordings manipulated via digital means. Parlane has released two solo albums on Sigma Editions, and a collaboration with Christian Fennesz on the Australian label, Synaesthesia. He has two solo albums out on Touch: Iris and Jessamine and he was featured on Christian Fennesz' recent release Black Sea.
Sublime sounds not to be missed!

Active since the early 90's in sound art and image, ILIOS (Greece) has been exploring the extremities of sound and image derived phenomena. Through constant change in his sound palette, touching and surpassing the limits of the sound spectrum, flirting with the opposites from ultra-orthodox silence to ultra-catholic noise, ILIOS advocates for an 'anti-career'. Some of ILIOS' recorded output has been regarded by the media as: "The sound of death" or "The most enervating record imaginable". ILIOS has collaborated with the likes of Francisco Lopez, Jason Kahn, Norbert Möslang, Xabier Erkizia, Julien Ottavi, Thurston Moore and Mattin and has performed more than 170 shows in various venues and festivals in Asia, Europe, South and North America.
This will be ILIOS' first Australian performance

Grong Grong Reunion - Melbourne/Geelong 10-11 Oct 2009

Tuesday September 29th @ the Make It Up Club

Tonight, some New Noise from Brisbane and some Classic Free Jazz from Melbourne. AXXONN is a new duo featuring Brisbane electro improvisers, Tom Hall and Ian Rogers, and hammers the universe of sound with grimcore ululations (evoking the ambience of black metal with the density of deep, subsonic drone). Blow!, is the legendary partnership of saxophonist Peter Harper and drummer Ted Vining, two inspired veterans of Melbourne's avant jazz scene who have been extending the vocabulary of free jazz for decades.
  • AXXONN featuring: Tom Hall (various analogue and digital sonic devices) and Ian Rogers (various analogue and digital sonic devices)
  • Blow! featuring: Peter Harper (reeds) and Ted Vining (drumkit), and special guests

This Wednesday the 30th of September @ Stutter...

  • DUCKTAILS (US) - Ducktails is the musical project of Matthew Mondanile originally from Ridgewood, New Jersey. “On the other side of the globe, solo artist Ducktails approaches psychedelic music from a pop perspective. Born in Northern Jersey and a graduate of Western Massachusetts liberal arts magnet Hampshire College, Matt Mondanile constructs tropical mixed tapes from outer space. Reached by phone before a show, Mondanile described his live performances as “like making a soundtrack to a movie on the spot.”

  • ARTEFACT (CAMILLA HANNAN / THEMBI SODDELL / EAMON SPROD) - Over the past 10 years, Thembi Soddell, Eamon Sprod and Camilla Hannan have developed innovative approaches in sound performance and composition. By collecting field recordings in each location and incorporating them into their performances, this Melbourne show for the Artefact Tour will be a joint condensed version of what they have all gathered throughout the tour, rather than 3 separate solo performances.

  • TOM HALL (QLD) - Hall's eclectic works flourish by utilising a variety of mediums, each that reflect on his varied background and interests. With a strong focus on elements of the 'everyday' Hall's practice involves considered explorations into place, space and time. Drawing inspiration from countless 'peripheral' spaces, Hall focuses on using multiple approaches to engage and recontextualise them to the public.

  • AMBROSE CHAPEL QLD - Ambrose Chapel is a new music project by Ian Rogers (of AXXONN and No Anchor). Forged in the sweltering spare rooms of Brisbane summers, Ambrose Chapel finds Rogers exploring new sounds, production techniques and modes of performance. The results are epic in design and structure, taking the ominous bass experiments of his doom metal band No Anchor and marrying them to AXXONN’s more sophisticated and tranquil palate. His current release is a split CD with Brisbane sound artist Tom Hall titled ‘Masters of the Epic Day’.

  • dj MR NATHAN GRAY between the acts!

Tuesday September 22nd @ the Make It Up Club

Two mavericks of the Australian avant scene present recent experiments in solo improv performance, and then combine for a debut duo collaboration. Chris Nylstoch as been at the forefront of totally fucked up improv for over a decade, and his latest explorations of ruined electric guitars have been a revelation for those caught in the post-Derek Baily cul de sac. Sean Baxter has similarly brought new life and performance possibilities to the drumkit, forsaking tradition by abusing the kit as an aleatoric device, pelted by an arsenal of metalic junk and percussive detritus.

  • Sean Baxter (drumkit and noise)

Dear Bands/Musicians/Soundmakers,

Whatismusic festival is presenting a very special large scale event for the 2009 festival - the project is called 50/50. 50 bands in 50 minutes, all set up simultaneously in a single room. Ambitious - yes, crazy - well...yes as well. At the moment we're looking for keen young (and old) go-getters who would like to be a part of the event - if you have gear and a minute's worth of creativity, or even pure derivative hilarity, then we'd like to hear from you!

The event will be taking place at the ABC's Iwaki Auditorium Southbank on the 19th of December, and will be recorded and broadcast by Radio National an hour following the gig. A project of such absurd and amusing magnitude has never been attempted on Australian shores, and should prove to be an amazing experience for anyone involved.

If you would like to be on the bill, send through a short description of who you are, what you do, and preferably a link to a short soundclip of your work to lloydhoneybrook@gmail.com* and we will endeavour to get back to you ASAP with some more details about locking your group in for the project.

Looking very much forward to hearing from you all, and making some ludicrous large-scale history!

all the best,
Robbie Avenaim & Lloyd Honeybrook

*for those of you who don't know Lloyd Honeybrook, he is co-ordinating and assisting the WIM festival with Robbie Avenaim this year, and in charge of the co-ordination for this particular project.

If there's any questions at all, don't hesitate to contact me through here, or I think you've all got my number 0402234548. Thanks heaps dudes, much obliged!

3 x Japanese Avant-Pop acts play Maximum Arousal next Tues Sept 15!

Tue Sept 15
The Toff 252 Swanston St Melbourne

Maximum Arousal presents:

Aus (Japan) + Cokiyu (Japan) + Cuushe (Japan) + Parttimer (Brisbane)

Tokyo is a city of endless tiny streets, sprawling parks and countless incongruous communities co-existing in a glorious pulse of activity. Amongst these communities is a wealth of curious sound makers and musicians creating work that defines a new vision of electronically manipulated Japanese songform. One label dedicated to this hybrid sound is Flau - and three of their key artists Aus (aka Yasuhiko Fukuzono), Cuushe and Cokiyu head to Melbourne this September to cast light over this effervescent new musical happening.

Aus's music unites small melodic passages with detailed layers of rhythm and texture gathered from his everyday surroundings. By contrast, Cokiyu creates work that references the pastural qualities of recent Icelandic outputs from Mum, offering suggestive melodies and sweeping emotive passages that bring the listeners ears into soft focus. Although ''nostalgic'' may be a word that most would use to describe her music, the sound of Cuushe is actually deeply rooted into the genre of dream pop….perhaps a much more broken type of dream pop. Feathery voices float in between the cleverly placed electronic sounds and gracefully sampled noises and field-recordings, carrying out melody after melody that are truly sublime and captivating. These beautiful electro-infused dreamscapes may vaguely remind you of Tujiko Noriko or even Björk, but it is also an undeniable fact that Cuushe has crafted some of the most uniquely exquisite pop sounds that you can ever find in today's indie music scene.

Joining them from Brisbane are lush minimal pop soloist Parttimer.
