JOLT 24 Hour performance - call for participants

(forwarded from Belinda Woods via Sean Baxter):

>I'm writing on behalf of James Hullick and Jolt Arts Inc. regarding a 24 Hour performance that is currently being curated as part of the Monolithica, ClickClack Project at Federation Square. We are wondering if anyone would be interested in taking part in this performance, basically volunteering your time (i.e. no performance fees are available).

Here are the details:
Square 2010: A continuous 24 hour piece for live musicians and electronic sound Federation Square 19th - 20th October 5:30pm - 5:30pm

Volunteers will be allocated a 1hr time slot which suits their availability. There will be a 15 minute overlap at either end to allow for interaction. Some basic instructions will be given to each performer/group of performers by James Hullick prior to the start of each act. There will be a fantastic sound system in place and lots of random fun to be had.

At this stage we are hoping to hear back from people about their interest, ideas and preferred time frame for performing. Co-ordination of exact times will then begin and more information will be given to each individual. If you'd like to perform or if you need to know more, just hit reply!

Cheers!

So U Think Ya Can't Dance

ATTENTION: BODIES!

WE WANT YOU to be a part of the So U Think Ya Can't Dance contest at Horse Bazaar.

Our aim is to find Melbourne's most enigmatic, harebrained and/or cockamamie dancer, in order to recognize the talent that exists outside of the elite. Let us not forget to mention the chance you will have to win prizes (which are far too incredible to reveal at this point).

Limited spots are available for groups and individuals.

Please confirm your place by sending this stuff in ASAP:
- Your name, and a description of what you do in one sentence (or less?)
- A picture of you, a headshot, or whatever, hi- or low-res: up to you. ((This will be used to form a poster (not for publication) and will be used to identify you during the judging process.))
- The type of music you would be dancing too.

If you are selected you will need to supply us with a track of your choice, which could be anything from pop to extreme noise, 5 minutes maximum.

email to: soyouthinkyoucantdance@gmail.com

We will contact you with further details if you are selected.
-----------

FYI-The gigs will run one Saturday a month for two months:
9 Oct, 6 Nov
With a final (date TBC) to take place in December as part of Stutter at Horse Bazaar.
------------

If you'd rather not blow peoples' minds live with your moves, send us in some video footage to be screened between the acts!

(There will be a prize draw for videos too)

Can't wait to hear from everyone, and witness the undoubtable magic!

(forwarded from Amanda Betlehem)

And a massive group featuring some of Melbourne's most experimental improvisers harvesting the limits of free jazz and free punk.

New releases/reissues on Shame File Music mailorder

John Watermann - "Calcutta Gas Chamber" CD Widely thought to be a minor modern masterpiece of post-industrial sound art, Watermann's best-known album is a sonic representation of cold, deathly machines that creak, thump and whine with subtle menace. This is the Cold Spring reissue, featuring Watermann's obscure explanation of the album's origin - AU$20ppd
Ethic Cleansing - "This Means You" cassette Collaboration between Melbourne noise projects Screwtape and Ebola Disco documenting a power electronics piece performed in January 2010. "This Means You" is a structured rant on the looming hell of dementia and the neglect that awaits many of us in old age. Side A is a home recording of the piece, and Side B is the intense live version. - AU$5ppd
Screwtape "Lower Forms of Life" cassette This release sees Screwtape in more drone/ambient form. Side A is created from a recording of fireworks, overlaid with a patented Screwtape drone. Side B uses samples and drones to create a haunting effect ocassionally reminiscent of Screwtape's Teaching Ravens To Fly Underwater release of a few years back.- AU$5ppd

Screwtape "Day of Hell" cassette Screwtape's response to the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires that devastated Victoria, killing over 170 people. Here environmental recordings along with electronics and effects represent that hellish day. - AU$5ppd
Screwtape "You Scum" mini CD Screwtape in power electronics/hate rant mode. Seven tracks of Screwtape's hate-filled rants against the various stupidities of society, accompanied by sampled loops and piercing noise. But unlike a lot of PE, the lyrics are very clear, and with the accompanying lyric sheet, there is no hiding the detail of the subject matter. AU$7ppd
Undecisive God "Archive seven: 2004" 2CD A complete live performance in Brisbane, reissue of the Live Performances tracks, plus a range of previously-unreleased tracks including collaborations with Jodi Rose and New Waver - AU$14ppd

An Afternoon with Maya

An Afternoon With Maya
Five of Melbourne's best experimental acts have organised for you the opportunity to see them play new soundtracks live to the films of Maya Deren.
Maya Deren was the first lady of avant-garde film making in the 1940's and 1950's, not only a filmmaker in her own right but also collaborating with the likes of Marcel Duchamp and Antony Tudor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_Deren Her films are a wonderfully textured and moodily lit black and white and deal with themes such as ritual, movement, violence and beauty.

On 4th September Occult Blood, Rottuer, Siilt, Electronic Shaman and Abre Ojos will play their own unique soundtracks to her films, including improvisations between Occult Blood and Rotteur, - Sillt, Electronic Shaman and Abre Ojos.

The films screened are:

Occult Blood: At Land
Rotteur: Ritual in Transfigured Time
Electronic Shaman: Meshes of The Afternoon
Siilt: Meditation on Violence
Abre Ojos: The Very Eye of Night

With collaboration performances to:
Witches Cradle and an edited version of Divine Horsemen- The Living Gods of Haiti

Rottuer: Rotteur makes cold, desolate soundscapes, haunted by droning machinery and sparse abstracted electronics. http://www.myspace.com/rotteur
Electronic Shaman: follower of the left hand path delivers resonance from the forgotten tombs of the old ones and stygian vistas of distant worlds http://electronicshaman.com

aphids & undue noise present WAITING TO TURN INTO PUZZLE

WAITING TO TURN INTO PUZZLE is a collaboration between a film artist and a contemporary classical composer, performed by a live chamber group while the film is being projected

This collaboration between film artist Louise Curham and Melbourne composer David Young features an experimental hand-processed super 8 film shot in Yokohama Japan, which forms the basis of the musical score. This graphic music notation allows a certain freedom and spontaneity in the performance of the music which accompanies the film, whilst remaining precisely structured. The music is performed live by Melbourne contemporary chamber group Quiver

Quiver is a group of young musicians described by The Age as a ‘talent-rich new body’, who joined forces early in 2009 to pursue the exploration of sound through performance, improvisation and installation. They are dedicated to presenting refined interpretations of new and obscure scores, and have already commissioned works by contemporary Australian composers. Quiver completed a highly successful debut concert series in 2009 and was awarded the Alan C Memorial Fund and the Atheneum Award for excellence in chamber music through the Victorian College of the Arts.

Quiver are: Rebecca Lane - flute, Aviva Endean - clarinet, Luke Paulding - tuba, Matthias Schack-Arnott - percussion, Jess Fotinos - harp

Supporting them will be Castlemaine group Atmos Ensemble. ̠tmos Ensemble grew out of Drome, a free improvisation event which ran for 2 years in Castlemaine from 2008 till early this year. The Ensemble is free improv and anti virtuoso in attitude, Their name defines the style and they aim to explore the musical and atmospheric possibilities of specific acoustic spaces. MARCO FUSINATO

On the back of last year’s incredible showcase the Ambarchi/Fox/Fusinato/Pateras line up is set to deliver another astonishing feast of sound. Fusinato’s noise maelstrom has been recently refined on-stage in Japan and Pateras is fresh from a sojourn in Silicon Valley where he’s been sharpening his sonic weaponry. This time around he’s joined by legendary Agents of Abhorrence rhythm genius Max Kohane and together they are PIVIXKI. Ambarchi has been working on a 6xLP Alga Marghen release and Fox has cooked up a few new jaw-dropping tricks with smoke, mirrors and, of course, lasers. This is a must see event delivered on one of the best sound-systems in town!

  • RAFAEL ANTON IRISARRI(U.S)
Seattle based artist Rafael Anton Irisarri (aka The Sight Below) has been exploring textural electronics for almost half a decade. His recorded output, captures an essential vision of floating tones, deep pulsing bass and textured Gaussian curves. His use of repeated phrases, taps into minimalist ideals, whilst his use of atmospheric layers of reverb suggests a more cinematic quality. His music has been described by The Wire contributing writer Jefferson Petrey as ''a dual perspective close-up focus on the micro textures of rustling static-filled sonic surfaces with the wide-open distant tree lined horizons of sunset at dusk.''

The human breath and it's sonic extensions are highlighted in Alice Hui-Sheng Chang and Rosalind Hall's duo, whose recent CD, From My Winter Snow Your Summer Fire Until My Autumn Rain Your Spring Sunshine is essential listening. And improv-genre polymath, Edryan Hakim leads Impvlse/Kontrol, where sounds of psychedelia, shoegaze, country-n-drone are cloaked in ambient blackness.

    Daniel Buess: Percussion, Electronics
James Hullick: No input mixing desks, Machines

The Swiss/ Australian duo that is Buggatronic started in 2009 when Daniel Buess and James Hullick joined forces in a cyclonic collision of sound. There is the signature of industrial noise in Buggatronic, but there is also a love of tightly timed formal design and aural choreography in the work. Daniel Buess brings his percussion background to the duo, as well as an array of electronic gadgetry and memories of space rock out convulsions. James Hullick meets Buess head on with specially built robotic music machines and the grind of no-input mixing desks. Amidst the showers of amplified dynamism and hard walls of sound, Buggatronic also capture the delicate moments. And then the cochlea tsunami washes it all away.
Buggatronic is urban life amplified for the 21st century.
