Vile Vortices presents Stutter Episode Three - Robbie Avenaim

Vile Vortices Productions' third episode of STUTTER features esteemed percussionist and What is Music festival curator Robbie Avenaim. This video captures highlights from a performance at Horse Bazaar from 1st July 2009. Drawing on some of the oneiric moods of his latest release "Rhythmic Movement Disorder", this extended improvisation is an aural feast of meditative sine tones, aleatoric automata, vibraphonic agitations and some stunningly executed solo statements.

Skronkin’ Brisbane-based free-jazz-rock-improv collective, The Mute Canary Project will be collaborating with local guests for a powerhouse performance. Led by one of Australia’s most respected contemporary jazz saxophonists, Elliot Dalgleish, the group traverses traditions and generations, delivering powerful improvisations with dense but sensitive blocks of sound. And, New Zealand sound artist Nathan Thompson (perhaps best known for his work in the legendary Sandoz Lab Technicians and Sleep) teams up with long-time collaborator and NZ émigré, Ryan Cockburn for a guitar/electronics duo.

For Quiver's upcoming show at 8pm on December 8th , Horti Hall is being transformed into a teeming architecture of sound, video and experimental installation.

With a strong focus on the relationships between sound and image, Quiver will be presenting diverse and idiosyncratic explorations by leading composers, improvisers and visuals artists.

Alvin Lucier's landmark work Queen of the South, for music, resonating surfaces, strewn materials and closed-circuit TV system, will inhabit the space, stretching the boundaries between concert performance and audio-visual installation.

The ensemble will feature Waiting to be Turned Into Puzzles, the 45-minute masterpiece by one of Australia's most innovative composers David Young, and incorporates the latest collaboration between himself and film artist Louise Curham.

And in an exciting one-off event, Quiver has invited live video-projection artist Anthony Magen, as well two of Melbourne's most dynamic improvising musicians, Dale Gorfinkel and Samuel Dunscombe, to develop a new work, Entropy Studies, extending the collaborative potential of live sound, video and electronics processing.

Tonight: Performance art, solo guitar and noise contraptions. Melbourne artist, Duckjuggler, presents his new installation piece cephalorgy combining live performance, automated objects and aesthetic mayhem. Lawrence Folvig returns for his latest explorations in rarefied, solo electric guitar improv. And local terrorizers of the New Noise, A. Wallace and Tom Hall make their debut at the MIUC with junk noise objects, electronics and strings.

After a thunderous return in 2008, the What Is Music? Festival is back again attempting even more ridiculous and sublime experimental music programming! After 15 years the reputation of the Festival speaks for itself and 2009 will see even more incredible performances and events unleashed upon Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
American laptop terrorist John Wiese will perform his first solo shows ever on these shores, having played the festival as a member of Sunn O))) in 2005, as well as premiering visual scores for large-scale ensemble. Expect the extremest of frequencies, and some of the best improv you've ever heard.
Joining us from Poland will be Musica Genera festival curators Robert Piotrowicz and Anna Zaradny. Robert is a master sculptor of dense, layered synth beauty, though his infamous grindcore roots lend a sense of the brutal/beautiful/brutiful. Anna brings a much needed and appreciated sense of feminine grace and patience with her complex, slow-shifting laptop work, not to mention an impressive pedigree including collaborations with Burkhard Stangl, Zbigniew Karkowski, Tony Buck and Cor Fuhler.
From Japan: hercel. Shayne Bowden/Ayako Mori, man/woman, painful/ecstatic, creation/destruction, foreign/familiar and lots more tasty dichotomy action, all wrapped in a crunchy shell of power electronics. Essential viewing for both the modern intellectual neanderthal and primitive reactionist übermensch alike.
Of course all your favourite locals (and expatriates) will be there too, including Oren Ambarchi, Jon Rose, Clayton Thomas, Clare Cooper, Jim Denley, Alan Lamb, David Shea, Brendan Walls, Matt "Skitz" Sanders and many more (un)usual suspects presenting new works, new sounds, new experiences.
Perhaps the most exciting event though will be the final night of the festival that Melbourne's already talking about, 50/50. Five conductors, four screens, three hundred seats, too much excitement in one massive night. 50 bands. 50 minutes. Not to be missed.

NGC1313 Spiral Galaxy in Reticulum – Abre Ojos @ Electundra

The latest Abre Ojos project is based around the amazing astronomy photographs of Marek Dobiecki, artist, teacher and astronomer. Dobiecki has built himself an observatory in his backyard in the Dandenong ranges where he tracks the night sky with his computer controlled f4.5 x 30cm Newtonian Telescope capturing galaxies, nebulae and star fields. The photographs are wonderfully fragile, textured, grayscale images of up to 2 hours exposure time revealing things we can not see with the naked eye.

These photos have been taken and built into a series of audio reactive animations and match to sounds built on the modular synth that have been created drawing on inspiration from space recordings and low frequency atmospheric sounds of the earth.

NGC1313 is being premiered at Electundra at Loop on Saturday November 21st @ 3pm sharp, tickets are $12.00.

An international percussion work of miniature proportions, Rosemary Joy's System Building fuses percussion and architecture on an intimate scale.
System Building features a new series of miniature percussion instruments, the construction of each instrument inspired by one of the venues in which the work is being performed.
Fresh from performances in the Netherlands and Berlin, System Building plays the Melbourne Recital Centre and Sydney’s CarriageWorks in November.

HILLINGAR / is the live entity that is Abre Ojos & Zac Keiller.
The shimmering ambient guitar work of the prolific Zac Keiller spans over 10 albums and one of these - Hillingar (nordic for mirage) was put into the hands of Abre Ojos to remix, reinterpret and add layers of sounds from his custom built eurorack modular synthesizer. Three tracks were chosen for treatment and the result is Hillingar - espejismo di yermo- the mirage wasteland (soon to be available online release).
With the tracks resulting in such a perfect marriage of styles, the two musicians have taken it one step further and will be re-creating their ambient drone compositions with a live performance of sound and visuals at the opening day of Electundra ’09.
Hillingar perform on Saturday November 14th @ 3pm sharp. Tickets $12.00.
