The final night in our series of special events for May is a celebration of wooden woodwinds. Featuring some of Melbourne’s most daring and adventurous improvisers, expect to expand your ears and eyes with the sonic possibilities of this humble, instrumental family. Often dismissed as the sonic wallflower of the Orchestra, woodwinds have nevertheless remained the backbone of Classical Symphonic timbre because of their organic resonance and adaptability in complimenting the varied sound-worlds of the other orchestral sections. In the hands of these performers, the richness and flexibility of the genus will smack you in the brain, with a series of solos, duos, trios and other confabulations, where extended technique and improv virtuosity will reign. The third night in our special events for May, sees The Psych Ward Cult with Strings. The Psych Ward Cult are a grim-junk-noise-improv Supergroup hatched from the worlds of new noise, grindcore and hardcore and drawing members from groups such as Pathetic Human, The Kill, Occult Blood, and Chrome Dome. Featuring Tom Miller, Tara Green, Liam Haryono, Nik Kennedy, Dan Brady, Shaun South and regular special guests, the group has made an explosive impact on Melbourne’s improv scene with live performances that can only be described as sublime—in a brutally, transcendental kind of way. For their MIUC show, The Psych Ward Cult will be joined by some of Melbourne’s most exciting emerging talents of extended technique on orchestral strings: Anthea Caddy (cello), James Rushford (viola) and Judith Hamann (cello). A very special night at the Make It Up Club, where Black Metal ambience and avant garde classical aesthetics collide in a super nova of improvised Grimcore intensity! The Make It Up Club

Sunhine & Grease InstoreJACK THE RAPPER (BE/QLD) - The renaissance man that is Jacques Ambach returns to Stutter for a ''Jack the Rapper International One-Man Show''. Perhaps his only Melbourne performance!
DAS BUTCHER - ''Mother used to always speak backwards to me, then one day I found a casio rapman in hard rubbish, I got dressed all in blood, made some noise, & this is what happened. Other bands include ARMYISH and HI GOD PEOPLE....''
ROBIN FOX / LLOYD HONEYBROOK - Sax noise miscreant Lloyd Honeybrook teams up with noise mafioso Robin Fox for a rematch after their ear-shredding set at the NowNOW (Sydney) in January. There will be noise, there will be the evocation of hitherto unexperienced frequency, there will be the osmosis of two humans trying to justify existence through sound. Solid.

Brothersister Presents
The first release from Drama in 3 years, combined with Inquiet's most recent group drumming effort and new work from Kharkov on beautiful see-through records. The unorthodox and homegrown medium of lathe-cut poly-carbon renders each record more of an obscure cultural artefact than a pinnacle of high fidelity. Digital copies of the mixes come with each copy sold.
These fine releases will be launched on 14 May 2009 at Bar Open, Brunswick Street Melbourne, as part of a Brother Sister Records dual 7 inch launch. Inquiet (ft Drama for Yamaha for one song), Kharkov, and Gugg (members of Paeces, etc) will all be playing.
Entry is Free and bands start at 8:30pm.
This year, the MIUC’s annual contribution to the Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival spans 3 generations of Free Jazz intensity (with a slight nod to the visceral power of extreme metal). From the venerable Ted Vining (a legend of the Melbourne free jazz scene in trio with the incredible Young and Fryer), to the exciting new directions explored by the emerging talents comprising the Dead Ants. And completing the bill, 2 new woodwind/percussion duos featuring bucketrider alumni with metal émigrés, O’Dwyer and Honeybrook. The Make It Up Club
