Sonia Leber and David Chesworth create a psychogeography of voice and space, using sound, vibration and metallic constructions. Human voices resonate throughout the space: babbling and uttering absurdities.

The elusive entity of the trickster is evoked. Here it is imagined as a noisy, mischievous interloper delighting in its own excess, able to change and move about without restraint, creating damage and disorder.

This is the duo's first Melbourne solo exhibition since Almost Always Everywhere Apparent was presented at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art in 2007 as part of the Helen Macpherson Smith Commission series.

Featuring some of Melbourne’s most daring and adventurous improvisers, expect to expand your ears and eyes with the sonic possibilities of this humble, instrumental family. Often dismissed as the sonic wallflower of the Orchestra, woodwinds have nevertheless remained the backbone of Classical Symphonic timbre because of their organic resonance and adaptability in complimenting the varied sound-worlds of the other orchestral sections. In the hands of these performers, the richness and flexibility of the genus will smack you in the brain, with a series of solos, duos, trios and other confabulations, where extended technique and improv virtuosity will reign.

hursday, 21 May Sabbatical presents the launch of our thirteenth series release, Palisades by Melbourne based duo James Rushford & Joe Talia (SBB013). This cavernous electroacoustic fabrication finds its heart in exploration of the unforeseen voices of their selected instrumentation and devices. These include prepared violas, autoharp, spring reverb tank, and various metal objects. The ensuing extended compositions incorporate elements of ethereal drone and instrumental concrète, with stasis as a recurring theme. James and Joe will be joined on this occasion by a series of duo performances from Thembi Soddell & Anthea Caddy, Forth Impact! and Witness Girl. Hosted by the Old Bar (74-76 Johnston Street Fitzroy Victoria), with doors opening at 8:30pm, action from 9pm, and six dollars in.

VICMOD RECORDS got talent!

VICMOD Records is a new experimental electronic music label.

We are interested in recordings that push boundaries in sound synthesis and arrangement. Recordings can consist of digital computer music, analog synthesis etc.


The label will release limited editions* of each recording and once they have sold people can buy the digital version indefinitely. * limited edition versions will come with extra bonus tracks and art etc.

We are currently working on the website and will have the label up and running hopefully by August 2009 at the latest. We already have 3 albums ready for release.

The third night in our special events for May, sees The Psych Ward Cult with Strings. The Psych Ward Cult are a grim-junk-noise-improv Supergroup hatched from the worlds of new noise, grindcore and hardcore and drawing members from groups such as Pathetic Human, The Kill, Occult Blood, and Chrome Dome. Featuring Tom Miller, Tara Green, Liam Haryono, Nik Kennedy, Dan Brady, Shaun South and regular special guests, the group has made an explosive impact on Melbourne’s improv scene with live performances that can only be described as sublime—in a brutally, transcendental kind of way. For their MIUC show, The Psych Ward Cult will be joined by some of Melbourne’s most exciting emerging talents of extended technique on orchestral strings: Anthea Caddy (cello), James Rushford (viola) and Judith Hamann (cello). A very special night at the Make It Up Club, where Black Metal ambience and avant garde classical aesthetics collide in a super nova of improvised Grimcore intensity!

Sense is a night of live performances pushing the overlapping boundaries between sound and vision.



Minimal duo infinite decimals (Barnaby Oliver - guitar and Don Rogers - bass) team up with Paul Rodgers (16mm projections and prisms) for an intense, multisensory, motorik set.



Bird Traps (aka Marcus Skinner) will be playing baritone guitar and backed by Jim Walter on field recordings, organ and processed sounds. Together they weave bold minimal motifs and diffuse instrumental soundscapes.



Scratchplate is the solo project of Dimitra (aux assembly). She builds up melodic, repetitive drones into thick swampy sounds that fall in and out of sync with the original theme. Scratchplate are enhanced by richly organic layered visuals from Kate Hodgetts.



Under his current moniker Sinuso Dial, Matt Leaf uses extended guitar techniques, dsp, field recordings, and a combination of visual processes to present immersive, ambient and seductive audio-visual works.

Digital copies of the mixes come with each copy sold.

These fine releases will be launched on 14 May 2009 at Bar Open, Brunswick Street Melbourne, as part of a Brother Sister Records dual 7 inch launch. Inquiet (ft Drama for Yamaha for one song), Kharkov, and Gugg (members of Paeces, etc) will all be playing.

Elements are a series of improvised audio-visual tracks based around the four alchemical elements of Earth, Air, Water & Fire. Drawing on the aesthetics of the Crowley Tarot painted by Lady Frieda Harris with imagery drawn from 50’s propaganda films these pieces combine long evolving drones from modular synths with sound reactive looping visuals and animated mandalas to create an immersive synaesthetic experience to give time for reflection and meditation.

Each week, for four weeks, a new element track will be released culminating in the fourth week with a limited edition DVD compiling all four tracks as well as an extra bonus fifth track, Spirit, which will only be available on the DVD.
