Franco-Moroccan experimental artist Sophia Djebel Rose returns with a new album called Sécheresse due out on February 17. The first single and video “Blanche Biche" off the album, is a baroque, dark and luminous murder ballad adapted from the French-speaking medieval repertoire.
It tells the story of a woman who transforms into a white doe at night, only to be murdered by her own brother while he’s hunting. Adapted by Rose into a eco-feminist ballad, the track becomes haunting and mesmerizing with elements of Middle Eastern music. The experimental video swirls in impressionistic images of nature and modernity, making for a perfect compliment to this dreamlike song.
Vinyl pre-order from Ramble Records, WV Sorcerer Productions & Oracle Records 18 Dec, full release Feb 17.
