Ernie says that the concept of 'the collection' intrigues him, and his reading has led him to the history of the Wunderkammer (the cabinet of curiosities) and of the wealthy men who created them, through to the strangely manufactured notions of the wild, foreign and exotic (the Other) in the display cases of many early public museums, particularly those of colonialist powers.
As a child, he was perennially disappointed at never finding the 'perfect' seashells he saw illustrated in children's books and encyclopedias. Yet he seemed to recognise even then the beauty still there in a broken and worn shard.
