Ernie Althoff's Steel Rods Machine, left; A Demon Sheen's Turntable Guitar, right
From the album liner notes:
"This project began in April 2019 with a kinetic percussion machine
playing long and short steel tines, some hollow long wooden boxes and a
small Indian drum being recorded. The resulting file, cleaned up and
edited, was then sent via the web to a studio over 100 km away. There, a
turntable and record rubbing the strings of an acoustic guitar to
produce a lush drone was constructed and recorded as a response.
These two recordings were then manipulated in ways serious and silly, devious and dexterous, ingenious and ingenuous, to make the 13 tracks here assembled as The Groaning Board. The album and track titles' culinary references stem from the idea of the two recordings as the 'raw' produce, from which the 'cooked' offerings are concocted. The first and final tracks give a taste of the 'raw', and the other eleven are served hot from the studios' cooktops and ovens!
