Drawing on Iranian traditional music, psych, rock and drone, the Gnäw duo of Simo Hakalisto and Arash Ghasemi first met in Milano, but they were born and raised in Finland and Iran, respectively.
Gnäw melts together different musical worlds and genres they have collected along the way. While Ghasemi brings an understanding of the vastness of the desert, Hakalisto offers the traditional Finnish "zoner" approach to composition and performance. What they create is a unique approach to Iranian traditional music played on a borderless drone chessboard.
Hakalisto and Ghasemi both play several traditional Finnish and Persian string instruments such as setar, santoor, or kantele. Hakalisto then feeds this palette with rich sounds from his synthesizer library and Ghasemi’s adds a touch of film-noir and psychedelic rock inspired electric guitar lines and hypnotic, dub-inflected bass.
