Buttress O'Kneel - Glutwave 2020: an exercise in excess

glutwave 2020

a riotous wall of plunderphonia mimicking the "too many things all at once" aesthetic of 2020, all improvised in a dozen or so layers of manipulated CDJ and Kaoss Pad jams.

from Stravinsky to The Black Eyed Peas to Han Bennink to Nirvana to Carcass to Peter Allen to Steve Reich to Morbid Angel to Bjork to Metallica to Sinead O'Connor to Flaming Lips to Prince to Edwin Starr to Rick Astley to The Beach Boys to Carl Stalling to Stockhausen to Jimi Hendrix to Carly Rae Jepsen to Led Zeppelin to Daft Punk to Dragon to Linked Horizon to Rachmaninov to Billie Eilish to Shakira to Slayer to Carolyn Connors to Destiny's Child to sound effects CDs to Grandmaster Flash to Skrillex to Ernie Althoff to Justin Bieber to Phish to Will Guthrie to Girl Talk to Chick Corea to Bee Gees to The Proclaimers to Amy Winehouse to Public Enemy to Peter Brotzmann to Chingy to the Beatles to Fred Van Hove to Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam to the Beastie Boys to Christina Aguilera to Rakim to the Little River Band to the theme from Towards 2000 - and so much more - this album cannibalises culture in glitch-sized bites and spits them back out only half-chewn, already hungry for more.

decomposed fragments of sound rush past, booping nostalgia and tweaking the nose of familiarity, before vanishing back into the dense post-genre whirlwind.

 glutwave 2020

is split into two halves of 20 tracks each, representing the two 20s in this remarkable year of bushfire and disease and global unrest and pandemic isolation and suicide and riot and thuggery and division and that thing where you realise this person you've known for years has suddenly become a Qanon Covid-is-caused-by-Bill-Gates mask-protesting 5G nutjob.

what a year.
