The Phonetic Orchestra: Silent Towns 24 Hour Live Stream

9pm 1/08 — 9pm 2/08, AEST

In June 2017, the Phonetic Orchestra presented “A Single Stunning Gaze in the Place des Vosages” at the Serralves em Festa in Porto. Beginning late in the evening and ending after sunrise, audiences were provided with mattresses and invited to stay throughout the night, slipping between states of sleep and wakefulness. This was our first foray into listening through various states of consciousness.

Our extreme-durational performances aim to reframe their physical and
psychological listening environment. Déjà vu, non-linear listening, and the reception of material in both sleep and waking states all become distinct possibilities. Expansive compositional structures call for unusual forms of listening, understanding, and relating to sound, space, and performance.
Silent Towns is a 24-hour live-stream performance that seeks new methods for connecting with listeners, exploring compositional possibilities that are unique to its format. Despite our multi-location spread (across Berlin, Melbourne, and regional Western Australia), there is an intimacy amongst our performers that we hope extends to our audience. We invite listeners to engage with the work in whatever way feels comfortable — in sleep, wakefulness, and anywhere in between.
