Tuesday June 3rd @ the Make It Up Club

This instalment of MIUC is an electroacoustic wonderland of amicably competing frequencies, where the electronic and the acoustic intermingle to create sounds greater than the sum of their textural components. David Ahern (of local aleatoric trailblazers Teletopa) left behind only one (loosely) composed score from his early period of embracing extemporaneity, 1971's Stereo/Mono for wind instrument and feedback, of which there is no known recording. As such, it is hard to conjure a better duo to interpret a complex, indeterminate work like this than Australia's leading saxophonic improviser Jim Denley and one of Melbourne's finest avant sound-crafting engineers Byron Scullin. Brigid Burke and Adrian Sheriff bridge the electroacoustic divide with a much more vigorous tact, smashing together packets of abstracted free-wind-and-percussion-isms and generative electronics in a plunderphonic-fuelled flurry. And three soundexplorers concerned with the vibratory possibilities of strings and skins and cords - cellist Freya Schack-Arnott, percussionist Sam Hall and vocalist Jenny Barnes - engage in collaborative efforts to emanate fresh, raw audial potentials.

Jim Denley [SYD] & Byron Scullin perform David Ahern's Stereo/Mono (1971)
Pausa II feat. Brigid Burke (Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Wood Flute, Percussion, Laptop) & Adrian Sheriff (Bass Trombone, Shakuhachi, Zendrum, Laptop, iPad)
