This week, MIUC boasts some perverse excursions into the realms of pop anti-aesthetics. From Shane Van Den Akker, the vocal massacre artist of such projects as Cult of the Placenta-Head and Disrupture is the new solo project, Donkey Mothers of Arse. Working through different forms of voice sound, ranging from acapella to electronic processing, this project sees the exploration of new concepts as they relate to an audience-centric context. Electronic mavericks, Miles Brown and Matthew Brown (from such post-punk-pop-projects as the Night Terrors and ZOND!), promise an orgy of analogue fecundity realised via theremin and synth—plugging things in where they shouldn't be plugged. And Mad Nanna, a group of luminaries from Melbourne's postcore scene, fusing a wealth of experimental musical practice with the aesthetics of no-fi outsider pop for an exclusive improv excursion amidst an active calendar of more “conventional” local appearances.
