For our annual
Melbourne Fringe Festival presentation, the
Make It Up Club is focusing exclusively on percussion. Over 2 successive Tuesdays, some of the city's most adventurous improvisers (spanning the worlds of avant classical, grindcore, sound art, free jazz, and art-punk), will push the rhythmic and timbral potential of the membraphone to extremes. Headlining each concert, a special exploration of current trends in realtime drumkit processing, with two titans of the experimental scene,
Robin Fox and
Robbie Avenaim, head to head on the 28th, and British code-ninja Ollie Bown (Icarus) manipulating grindcore powerhouse
Max Kohane (
AoA,
Pivixki) on the 5th. The rest of the program includes large group collaborations, including a quartet comprising four of the most exciting emerging percussionists from the avant classical and free improv milieu, comprising
James McLean,
Nat Grant,
Gareth Thomson and
Matthias Schack-Arnott. And a quartet featuring 4 of the boldest women drummers in the art and punk scenes at the moment:
Bianca Hester (
The French,
Paeces),
Maya-Victoria (
Occult Blood),
Jen Tait (
GoGenreEverything) and
Harriet Morgan (
ZOND,
Wasted Truth). Solos that span the sonic spectrum from
Riki-Metisse Marlow's aleatoric sound sculptures, and
Joe Talia's (
Wirewalker) expansive cymbals and drums to the blastasfuck onslaught of
Brad Smith (
Super Fun Happy Slide,
Holy Boner). And a duo featuring two of Australia's most respected percussive explorers from the traditions of free improv and avant classical:
Sean Baxter (
Pateras/Baxter/Brown,
Embers) and
Eugene Ughetti (
SPEAK Percussion). GIVE THE DRUMMER SOME!!!
