On stage for the first (and perhaps last) time are The Un-Australian String Quartet. featuring:

Jon Rose – violin, tenor violin
Erkki Veltheim
– violin, viola
James Rushford
– viola
Anthea Caddy – violoncello

On the big screen is archive video footage of fences in the Australian outback played by Jon Rose and Hollis Taylor.

This is a rare chance to hear some of Melbourne’s finest string players with violinist, improviser, composer, instrument maker & hacker - Jon Rose.

For over 35 years, Jon Rose has been at the sharp end of experimental, new and improvised music. Central to that practice has been 'The Relative Violin' project, a unique output, rich in content, realising almost everything on, with, and about the violin - and string music in general. Most celebrated is the worldwide Fence project; least known are the relative violins created specifically for and in Australia.

Anthea Caddy is a cellist and sound artist interested in the relationship between recording, spatialisation, and the instrument. Exploring the cello’s textural, spatial and dynamic capabilities, she draws reference points from electro-acoustic music and sound art.

James Rushford is a young Melbourne-based composer/performer. As a composer, James has been commissioned by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Speak Percussion, Team of Pianists, CUSP Gallery/Chunky Move Dance Company, The Australian National Academy of Music, the Melbourne International Arts Festival (2006), the Now Now (2009) and the 21:100:100 project (a collaboration with Oren Ambarchi and Marco Fusinato). His regular ensembles include the rock duo Johnny Saw Horses, an improvisation duo with Joe Talia, as well as the avant-classical ensemble Golden Fur (premiering works by Anthony Pateras, Kate Neal, Marco Fusinato, Phill Niblock, Alexander Garsden and Jaap Blonk).

Erkki Veltheim is a violinist, violist, composer and improviser. He is a member of contemporary music ensemble ELISION, improvisers' ensemble Australian Art Orchestra and country punk band Roadkill Rodeo. He is a regular performer with Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, and has also performed with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Modern (Frankfurt), musikFabrik (Cologne) and Australian indigenous singer-songwriters' collective Black Arm Band.
