Problem with Exp-Melb email notifier

A few people have mentioned to me that the Email Alert for this blog on occasion resends old posts.

I've been looking into this the past few weeks, but not solution has been suggested to me from various help forums besides resyncing the feed that generates this email; which I've done, but the problem is still occurring.

It's not an isolated problem. I've found other people asking about it online as well, but no one seems to have an explanation or a fix. It has to do with the Feedburner RSS feed.

So unfortunately, we are stuck with it for now. If you are relying on the email alert, make sure you check the dates of any events before you charge off to the venue, in case it happened months ago.

Note that this is only a problem with the email notifier, the blog itself is still working fine.

Shades of Silence (workshop) - Cecil Street Studio - 27 Nov 2016

Shades of Silence
a vocal improvisation workshop

With Alice Hui-Sheng Chang

Shades of Silence is a vocal improvisation workshop focusing on listening, breathing, and sounding. We experiment with sound based vocal expression that sits outside of the context of singing and speaking. The workshop explores a range of vocal percussion, breath movement, vocal textures and vibrations, and the acoustic property of the site. We will also explore improvisation from duo to group, and with participants’ own conceptual, text and graphic scores.

This final and advanced series focus on building each participants’ multifaceted performance strength, open to previous participants or interested vocalists of various fields.

At Cecil Street Studio – 66 Cecil St, Fitzroy, VIC 3065

About Alice Hui-Sheng Chang

As a vocalist working with extended techniques, Alice builds intimate exchanges with her audience. She creates an array of timbres and textures by controlling tension in her throat and alternating the passage of air and vocalisations. Alice’s performances respond to the energy of the audience, employing sound varying from the calm to the extreme to create an awareness of the acoustic properties of the site. She challenges the boundary of a presentation site physically and imaginatively, viewing each performance as a site-specific response.

Alice is based in Tainan, Taiwan. She has run vocal workshops in Taiwan, Australia, France and Portugal and performed across Australia, New Zealand, Asia and Europe. She has degrees in Media Arts & Master of Fine Arts (Sound Art) from RMIT (2005/2006), and MA by Supervision from MIECAT Institute (2014). She has experience running different group vocal workshops resulting in an experiential public performance, also one-off audience participation vocal ensemble.

About Alice
(MA-Experiential and Creative Arts Practice, MIECAT; MFA-Sound Art, RMIT)
I am currently based in Tainan, Taiwan. I am a vocalist and sound artist, practicing locally and internationally since 2003, between Melbourne and Taiwan. My passion in working with human voice is the exploration of sounds outside of conventional language and melody. I have conducted vocal group workshops since 2006. As an artist, I have published and performed with dream materials inspired by myself and others.
In 2013, I conducted Dream Embodiment as part of my practice-led research at MIECAT, I completed a thesis with the same title in 2014. I am passionate about sharing my experience and enabling others to explore the connection between voice and dream.

Tremor - Arts House 16-20 Nov 2016

Tremor by Ashley Dyer has been created with sound artist Nigel Brown (back in Melbourne for the shows) amongst a team of collaborators and performers. It features an 8 x 10 meter custom built instrument consisting of close to 250 pieces of sheet metal vertically suspended that are activated by 16 powerful low frequency transducers. The resulting movement and sonic potential charts precise sine tone visualisations and rich metallic harmonics, through to chaotic flailing and thundering crashes. Brass, copper, sprung steel and aluminium. With thanks to Len Lye for much of the inspiration. Detailed pattern sequences of movement are performed in the centre of the instrument/set by three dancers.

Shame File Music - new releases, Artefacts special offer ends

New on Shame File Music -

Joe Musgrove/Makro & Hetlev “Surface Noise Vol. 3” CDR

A double header from a selection of Brisbane masters of drone and electronic abstraction. Musgrove has long been a master of all things drone, with both his solo work and as part of Biffplex. On his track we hear the last part of an 8 hour overnight performance, as it all grinds to an entropic end. Makro/Hetlev are Lloyd Barrett (Diaspora, Secret Killer of Names) and Paul Forbes Mitchell (Hetleveiker) in live electronic dialogue. Stream online here -

Surface Noise is a series of limited edition (50 copies), hand-numbered CDRs documenting live performances of experimental and noise artists. Each volume features live performances from two different artists; the first initially invited by the curators, and the second then chosen by the first artist. Co-released by Melbourne labels Iceage Productions and Shame File Music, the series will consist of ten volumes.

The Surface Noise series so far:

Vol. 1 – cleaninglady/Klunk – copies still available

Vol. 2 – Cat Hope/White Drummer – sold out

Vol. 3 – Joe Musgrove/Makro & Hetlev – out now

Vol. 4 – Ben Byrne & Rosalind Hall/Anthea Caddy & Matthew Davis – out soon

New additions to Shame File Mailorder:

Various Artists - "All My Sins Remembered: The Sonic Worlds of John Murphy" 3CD

Murphy was at the cutting edge of Australian underground music since the 1970s, and later a key player in the forging of European industrial music. His influence and collaborative reach is extensively documented in this beautiful 3 CD set, spanning 40 years of musical output (from 1975 to 2015, the year of Murphy's death). The bands and projects here of which Murphy was a member are a veritable roll call of the dark/noise/industrial canon, including NEWS, Whirlywirld, Orchestra of Skin and Bone, SLUB, SPK, Whitehouse, Lustmord, Browning Mummery, KnifeLadder and countless others. The CDs are housed in a lavish full colour cardboard foldout box, which also includes a 32 page booklet with photos and notes by several Murphy collaborators and friends. Limited edition of 750, but only a handful available in Australia.

Nat Grant "Momentum" 4CD

More than four hours of Nat Grant's epic cumulative composition project from 2012. 'The idea behind this project is one of self-reflection and exploration of cumulative compositional processes. My aim is to build, over one year, layers of sounds and musical motifs that will form an entire composition'.

Nat Grant "Momentum: Turkey" CD

One part recorded each day, as part of Grant's year-long 'Momentum' project.

Nat Grant "Momentum: Live" CD

Four days of field recording and four nights of live sound sculpture for Melbourne Fringe Festival, September 2013 at Conduit Arts Space, Melbourne.

Nat Grant "Precious" 7" vinyl

Precious blurs the boundaries between functional object and musical instrument. This work was created over 2013-15 and involved collecting hundreds of old keys - keys to things that didn't work or exist anymore, or keys that had been found: any number and size/shape as long as they were no longer needed or wanted. Limited edition of 100 copies, hand-numbered and signed, clear vinyl, with download card.

Artefacts of Australian Experimental Music special offer ending soon

The long-standing special deal for volume 1 & 2 of the Artefacts series (the latter a double CD) ends next week on Tuesday 15 November, as copies of Volume 1 are getting low now. AU$50 gets you both copies sent anywhere in Australia, AU$54 elsewhere (that’s a saving $16).

Artefacts is a landmark CD series that documents the forgotten pioneers of Australian experimental music, releasing many recordings for the first time with extensive liner notes.
