What Is Music? - 8 & 10 Dec 2011

What Is Music? is back for its 13th year of existence with two killer nights of avant sounds at the East Brunswick Club and Revolt Melbourne, attempting to hit every frequency in the audible spectrum!
Thursday 8 December 2011 @ East Brunswick Club
This night will see the debut of a new piece Molecular Music Project Number 1, composed by Melbourne’s favourite drumjunk abuser/sonosphere explorer Sean Baxter for Australia’s leading new music ensembleGolden Fur, which comes with the caveat “culminates in a sustained and uncomfortable refrain in the higher registers”. The mid-range density abuse is supplied by guitar obliterator Marco Fusinato, again with Golden Fur, reviving their far-too-rare, undeniably brilliant collaboration that takes the harshest of electronics and seamlessly adds usually delicate, though hyperamplified, electroacoustic music into a swirling mass of ecstatic controlled chaos. The night concludes with a special extended set from Oren Ambarchi and Joe Talia, more than fulfilling the bass quota for the gig! Ambarchi’s lush abstracted guitar and Talia’s sophisticatedly discriminating drumming are the perfect pairing, droning into the abyss and into the unknown…
Doors: 7:30pm
Venue: East Brunswick Club, 280 Lygon St, East Brunswick, 3057
Cost: $10 on the door (no pre-sale)

[Melb, AU] 25.11.11 - SoundBytes 10 - wah wah lounge - 185 lonsdale st

We are now in countdown mode to the biggest ever chipmusic event to hit Australian shores, and in our last SoundBytes for 2011 we want to remind you just how good the Australian talent is before we bring you international artists to compare with!
In association with Melbourne Music week, we’ve pulled together a combination of regulars, old favourites and a new discovery to bring you Melbourne’s most high energy, low tech audio experience.
Adelaide’s Doctor Chipmusic himself, little-scale returns to Melbourne for the first time in over a year to show case exactly what he’s been up to in the last twelve months and has some amazing material to share.
From Sydney, Abortifacient gets back to Melbourne after playing amazing shows in Europe and Japan earlier this year to show off a bunch of brand spanking new material for its Melbourne debut.
The core of Brisbane’s chip scene dot.AY finds himself back in Melbourne, along with one of his Brisbane partners in crime Rubijaq, they will be fresh from supporting Daedelus on the Brisbane stop of his Aussie tour.
Of course we haven't forgotten the locals. After two blip festival performances in a year (which, for the uninitiated, is a pretty huge deal!) cTrix is back on the line up for show #10, as is Maddest Kings Alive playing material guaranteed to get you bouncing.
This will be the very last SoundBytes til our MASSIVE Two day Blip Festival shows in conjunction with 8bitpeoples in February, so start the festive season off right by getting your chip on.

Slub - Thornbury Theatre - 26 Nov 2011
After 15 years of silence & hibernation SLUB have re-assembled!! They play a one-off show to conicide with the ROOTTMANN Lp appearing on CD (and re-mastered) for the first time since its original vinyl release in 1989.Original ROOTTMANN co-workers, noise-maestro JOHN MURPHY and drummer CHRIS HUGHES now reside in Berlin and will be present in spirit - neither could face the long swim (or the ride on a leaky boat) to partake in this 'multi-media' performannce!
This pair will be ably replaced by new members MICHAEL WILCZEK (drums - GRONG GRONG) and guitarist TROY NORFOLK (SCOURGE, CHRISTBAIT), who join PETER KENNY - original member since SLUB's conception - sharing vocal duties with near-birth SLUB identity SONKE RICKERTSEN (on guitar also).
For this very special event, Collingwood artist DEAN McINERNEY will employ 2 film screens strectching across the vast interior of The Thornbury Theatre to project an array of abstract visual works.
True to its philosophy of 'constant change', SLUB's latest incarnation is spiked some new material, and a few surprises, even for those familiar with SLUB's output. Note: SLUB vocalist VIKKI RILEY has had to prioritised her pressing refugee work in the NT thus won't be partaking in this show
Supports HARRY HOWARD & NDE and CUBA IS JAPAN guarantee a very special night.
People this event is not to be missed - it is both noise-music history, and history in the making!
