  Erkki Veltheim's one-man grindcore band attempts to prove the alchemical hypothesis by turning gold back into base metal.

• SLAWEK JANICKI / JOHN VON STURMER / KRIS WANDERS
  Slawek Janicki and John von Sturmer have developed an improvisational and experimental practice, which seeks to create a total art event. Their work is situational and responsive, seeking to work with immediate and locally-relevant concerns. They are concerned with matters of language and questions of translation across cultural and other divides.

Slawek Janicki comes from a background in musical improvisation generally involving the double bass. He is also a filmmaker and cultural events curator, working also with a number of Art TV channels in Europe and Australia. He operates the legendary performance space ‘MOZG’, based in Bydgoszcz, central-northern Poland.

John von Sturmer has an academic background, and an extensive involvement in Aboriginal affairs. In more recent years he has centralised the notion of performance in his practice, often combining performance texts with a strong visual arts element.

They will be performing with Melbourne based sax player, Kris Wanders. Janicki has been working with Wanders for last 5 years.

(This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.)

Masaya Nakahara is one of the original purveyors and legends of Japanese noise. His musical activity under the Violent Onsen Geisha guise in the 90s made him a noise icon and he currently works under the Hair Stylistics moniker. With the glut of entry-level noisicians knocking out cassettes left right and centre, Nakahara's output has been one of the scenes saving graces. Utilising a vast array of effects and samples, Nakahara manages to create a swarming collage of active soundscapes that are rich in texture, from harsh sound shards to warm bass pulses with alot of humour to boot. The tendency toward silliness extends to his ingenious punning track titles (''Anal Collective'' and ''R.I.P Old Dirty Bath Towel'' are two recent examples) and such humour is what the whole noise scene is greatly lacking. One of his ongoing projects is the brilliantly named duo Suicidal 10cc, with Jim O'Rourke. Nakahara has also written about film and regularly organises and contributes to film festivals in Japan. As an acclaimed writer of novels he has recieved the Yukio Mishima Prize.
This guy is a legend and this is his only Melbourne performance!

This evening also features a rare one-off Melbourne appearance from the Menstruation Sisters.
''Unlike anything book or animal, the M.Sisters destroy wholly'' - Thurston Moore, Sonic Youth.
Menstruation Sisters are more of a natural phenomenon than a musical group. Owing more to the sound of ice melting and eggs hatching than strummed guitars and pounded drums, the Sisters keep one ear on the ground and the other towards the atmosphere. Rather than working within the lines of modern rhythm and structure, they revert towards a primal direction, cutting off the fat and oozing forth only the most natural and unfettered sounds. Naturally, such a technique can be unsettling, as it's not something most humans are interested to hear, or have heard since upright-walking became a viable mode of transportation. This is music for those who kill their own food.

And to top it off Marco Fusinato will be launching his new LP ‘Ambianxe’ out on Sydney label Spring Press. Featuring two live recordings of his incendiary concréte guitar crush from earlier in the year at SuperDeluxe, Tokyo. Fusinato is well known for his art/music crossover that ‘extends the traditional language of the guitar to distressed oblivion, compounding deracinated electronic detritus into over-amplified dreamweapons, unleashing tsunamis of ecstatic free noise’. Bring cash.

Central Victoria's sound art collective called undue noise has been organising events since 2002. This exhibition, entitled metasonic 2, at Allan's Walk Artist Run Space features works by members of undue noise as part of the local component of the national Liquid Architecture sound art festival.
Following last year’s successful metasonic exhibition at Dudley House, we return with metasonic 2, featuring works involving sound, and sometimes more. Central Victorian artists involved this time are Paul Fletcher, Simon Howard, Bridget Robertson & Jenny King, Annie Piranha, Mathew Underwood, Michael Harkin, Andrew Goodman, Jacques Soddell. They will present a wide range of artworks ranging from simple listening experiences to interactive works, some audio only, others including video.

Tuesday July 5th @ the Make It Up Club

This week, some very punchy, acoustic free improv. Propelled by 2 drumkits augmented with saxophone and guitar, the M-B Project is a Brisbane/Melbourne collaboration comprising some of Australia's most exciting, emerging improvisers, straddling the worlds of free jazz, abstract improv and avant-hardcore. Both recently returned from Japan, Honeybrook and Baxter reprise their new acoustic duo that channels the Interstellar Space of Ali/Coltrane through the filter of extreme, grinding metal and noise. And, upping the percussive anti, a drumkit quartet featuring the aforementioned joined by Melbourne wunder-schlagwerker, Gareth Thomson.

Google Calendar for Experimental Melbourne

Thomas Dunstan has been good enough to assist me with setting up a new feature for the Experimental Melbourne blog - a Google Calendar. This lists events in calendar form, so you can browse a week or a month and see what events are on. One of the problems with the blog is that you can't view events in chronological order, only in the order they are posted, so we hope this will make it easier to do this.

You can view the calendar by clicking on the Google Calendar link at the top left of this page, or simply going here. Please note the calendar is only a pilot at the moment. Currently only Thomas and I have access to adding/editing events, but everyone can view it, and if you use Google Calendars yourself you can add events to your own calendar. In future we will look at giving access to other Experimental Melbourne blog authors so they can add their own events as well. Note that the blog will continue as usual, and that I don't envisage the calendar replacing the blog, just supplementing it.

I would really like to get everyone's feedback on this feature over the next few months - if you like it or not, suggestions for improvements, etc. Your response will be significant in deciding whether it becomes a permanent feature or not.
