This week at MIUC, some postmodern improv explorations. First up, the bearded half of legendary plunderphonics duo, Antdiluvian Rocking Horse, presenting the premier performance of his art project "records are made to be broken," wherein Paul Wain has meticulously re-glued together some choice cuts of vinyl platter deliberately shattered in prior art aktions; then a duo featuring 2 generations of extreme, extended woodwind technique from 2 practitioners inhabiting the frontiers of their practice; and finally, a collaboration that had to happen with Fox and Baxter in a realtime-processing maelstrom of percussive-junk-noise-maxmsp brutality.

PINK TWINS + VIJAY THILLAIMUTHU

PINK TWINS (musicians and video artists, brothers Juha and Vesa Vehvilinen from Helsinki, Finland) build a tissue of connections between their sound work and their visual work, attempting to intimately join mundane fragments usually disjoint. They work from fragments of images, sounds and sensations which our daily life is subjected to in order to break them down into small particles and reunite them once again in audacious constructions formed from chaos, pulverising and rendering them abstract, according to a unified artistic sensitivity. Their concerts are surprising chromatic combinations with strong sonic collusions which correspond to a deep need, with nothing superfluous.

Active since 1997, Pink Twins have played their music to audiences in Europe and Asia, in festivals, art spaces, clubs, churches and outdoor events, and displayed their video works on all continents.

This will be their only Melbourne performance!

This week's concert features a stellar ensemble led by one of the MIUC's founders, Ren Walters. Ren's This Ensemble have performed some sublime, challenging and rarefied, abstract improv over the years, and this incarnation of the group promises nothing less. Over 2 sets, and divided into 3 ensemble sub-groups displaced around the room (acoustic, electronic and amplified bands in opposite apexes of the space), the performers will be exploring the dynamics of inter and intra group improvisation, firstly with a series of miniatures, and then with a large collaboration in the second set.

Tonight, 2 groups evoking the groundbreaking experiments in free jazz from the late 60s and early 70s. Skepper/Harrison/Lewis return to the MIUC for their contemporary take on the electronic experiments begun by Miles Davis in his electric bands of the 1970s; and saxophone powerhouses, Kris Wanders and Andy Sugg, along with German drummer Jan Leipnitz, lead a stelar cast of local improvisers in an ensemble that pays homage to the visionary outsider-jazz of Albert Ayler.

un Magazine – Melbourne’s leading independent magazine for writing on contemporary visual art. un
Magazine fosters and offers opportunities to promote independent and critical thinking regarding
contemporary art in all media. Focused on artists, writers, artist run and independent projects and
contemporary art communities, un Magazine is an important platform for the dialogue of ideas
extending from the local into national and international contexts.

We welcome proposals for contributions including but not limited to: criticism or review of recent
contemporary art projects, exhibitions and publications (taking place in the previous five months);
interviews; essays and features on topics of current debate; and experimental contemporary art
practice engaged with text, writing or publication modes of display.

For this issue we are particularly interested in: writing that engages with multidisciplinary
practice and art outside the gallery (i.e. site-specific work, performative practices, etc.); styles
of writing ranging from the critical and analytic to creative and fictional or speculative;
interviews; artist pages; art as text and collaborations.

Thursday July 16 will see Pony host a night of electrified otherness. Shellys (AKA Nick Levey) will begin proceedings with his voyages through levitating digital soundscapes, followed by A. Wallace & Tom Hall's improvisations that blend disguised exotic instruments, found sounds and walls of solid drone. Galactogogue (AKA Mark Skelton) will provide a set of permanently mind jarring bass destruction. Headlining the night are Dead Ants Rainbow (Troy Peter James Naumoff and co.), who channel dark joy and mirthsome solemnity directly from the outer realms, and present it to the Earth world.

• CRAY vs CLEANINGLADY - A First time meeting of VICMOD Founder / Analogue Modular Synth Honcho - Ross Healy and local sound brutalist - Stephen Richards. Cray (Ross Healy) will be performing on an assortment of strange analogue noise machines including The Moisturiser VS cleaninglady (Stephen Richards) play saxophone , various wind instruments and empty mixer.

• SECRET BIRDS (BRIS) - Brisbane’s psych/experimental collective Secret Birds will be doing a Krautrock set with a cameo from Aoi.The last remaining copies of the band’s debut release “Double Snake Hollow”, a 32minute cassette release will also be available for purchase at the shows. As described by Jakeb Smith of Rave Magazine, the tape consists of three “elongated pieces of music, each with sparse, lethargic rhythms and a focus on esoteric melodies drawn from chaotic oscillations.”

‘The collaboration of Alan Lamb, Rosalind Hall, Dale Gorfinkel and Peter Blamey brings together four artists who are exploring experimental approaches to sound through instrument building and installations.

Expect a wondrous world of automated contraptions, supermagnets, long wires, ping pong balls, multi-speaker sculptures, cellular automata and electronics. They will be creating an exhibition of constantly transforming kinetic sculptures that explore the chaotic interplay between sound, light, air, water and electricity.

Alan Lamb’s (WA) work involves the exploration of sound structures, neither musically ‘designed’ nor of random occurrence. Such structures possess the properties of beauty, complexity and evocation of the emotional, the spiritual and the imaginary.
Dale Gorfinkel (VIC) builds automated mechanical sculptures based on his unique approach to the vibraphone. He creates wondrous sonorities using motors, aluminum bars, swinging tin resonators, ping pong balls and trumpets that play themselves.
Rosalind Hall (VIC) is developing a unique sonic language by making modifications to the saxophone. Rosalind has also been working on speaker sculptures which use vibrational feedback to create sound and movement.
Peter Blamey (NSW) is an artist who has been working with simple electronic feedback systems in both performance and installation for quite a while now, and looks like continuing to do so for the foreseeable future.

Location Sound Films

The Location Sound Films project starts with the concept of site-specific artistic activity while integrating contemporary sound recording practices that cross the areas of performance, field recording, improvisation and documentation. With the site being the prime focus, the artist as actor and instigator uses the means of sound to investigate the qualities of a specific context and his or her place in it. Various techniques are used to make recordings, some more clearly visible than others, depending on the type of sound captured (stereo condenser microphones or contact microphones). For this installation, a selection of my films has been edited as a multi-screen, multi-channel environment that plays on random, creating a continually shifting chance composition.

As a mixed-media artist, John Grzinich has worked primarily with sound composition, performance and installation since the early 1990s with a focus on site-specific and acoustic sound activity. He is a program and media lab coordinator for MoKS - Center for Art and Social Practice, an international artist residency centre and project space in south east Estonia

One of the MIUC’s driving forces in the early days (and one of Australia’s most celebrated avant-jazzers), Tim O’Dwyer returns to Melbourne from Singapore for a duo with sound artist extraordinaire, Dale Gorfinkel; a new electro-noise collaboration between young avant terror, Sam Dunscombe, and legendary Chicago exile, Casey Rice; and, for his debut at MIUC, Perth’s noise deconstructionist, Malcolm Riddoch.
